Harold and Maude by Colin Higgins

The theme for this unit deals with "Living Within Society's Norms and Breaking Out of Society's Norms."  Where The Scarlet Letter deals with the living within society's norms, Harold and Maude is the opposite; it deals with the breaking out of society's norms.  Harold and Maude is teamed up with Jonathan Livingston Seagull, Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson to show the different philosophies of rebelling against society.  In the 1860's, there was a philosophy started called Transcendentalism, a belief of transcending beyond one's own limits and being an individual.  Through Harold and Maude, Jonathan Livingston Seagull, Emerson, and Thoreau, we will study the idea of transcendentalism and how it relates to the past and the present.  When we finish the with Harold and Maude there is a test over the novel.  We will continue with Thoreau and Emerson and when we have completed them, there will be an essay using all the works in this unit.  Below is a brief description of the novel.

HAROLD AND MAUDE
When Harold met Maude, he was a young man staging elaborate and hilarious stunts to get people to notice him-but he was also a man scared of life.  Then Maude came along-an off-beat, up-beat, totally marvelous woman who was as funny as she was wise.  And soon her love of life gave Harold the Love of his life...

Harold and Maude was made into a video in the early 70's.  Cat Stevens did the music for the movie.  The songs are on the CD called Footsteps In The Dark - Greatest Hits Volume Two.
