The unit theme that Thoreau appears in is the "Living Within Society's
Norms and Breaking Out of Society's Norms." Thoreau falls into the
"Breaking Out" side. We study two different pieces from Thoreau.
The first one is excerpts from his piece, Walden. The second is an
excerpt from Resistance To Civil Government. These are studied in
conjunction with Ralph Waldo Emerson, Harold and Maude and on the
opposite side, "Living Within Society'sNorms," there is The Scarlet
Letter. Thoreau, along with others of the 1860's, believed in a philosophy
called Transcendentalism. This belief has many concepts and can be
very complex, but to try and sum it up in short and simple terms, it is
a belief of transcending beyond one's own limits and being an individual.
Once we finish with Thoreau, Emerson, and Harold and Maude, we do a thesis
based essay on the all the works in this unit. |
American Studies
From a historical stand point, Thoreau and his counterparts come in
when we finally are calling ourselves Americans. The Revolutionary
War has ended and we are in a time of building our nation. Our Puritan
beliefs are drastically changing form, as we embrace nature and God has
become a kinder, gentler God. We study two different pieces from
Thoreau. The first one is excerpts from his piece, Walden.
The second is an excerpt from Resistance To Civil Government. These
are studied in conjunction with Ralph Waldo Emerson, Harold and Maude.
